Tarot Card Meanings - The Magician

In this second of a series of articles on the Major Arcana and their meanings, I m going to focus on The Magician. After reading this article, you should have a solid understanding of what The Magician is, what it means and how to interpret it in a spread.

The Magician is really all about power, the mind and faith. The Magician may very well be one of the most important cards in the Major Arcana, for without power, your mind and faith, there is really little that you ll be able to accomplish in this lifetime.

Many people confuse the name of this card and literally take it for what it portrays, magic. This can t be farther from the truth. The Magician is a card of mastering that which is around you, no matter what it is. It s having the faith to believe that no matter what the obstacles may be, there is a way past any problem.

In the normal position, The Magician shows this positive outlook in the subject. When this card falls in the ninth position in a Celtic Cross spread, is shows that the subject is confident and knows that anything is possible through God s power. This person knows that the formula for success is to have courage and faith no matter how bleak things may get.

In the fifth or sixth position, this card signifies that the subject is going in the right direction with their life and the outlook, in relation to the question for the spread, looks quite favorable.

However, as with all the Major Arcana cards, there is a dark side to The Magician as well. It is not so much black magic as it is an abuse of power and lack of faith. Many subjects who have this card fall in the reverse position usually head down a path where they are thinking only of their own selfish needs. Some of the greatest master manipulators will have this card show up in the ninth position reversed.

For most people, who are not quite that sinister, they are simply not applying themselves in the right way and only need a change in direction to put them on the right course. In almost all these cases, a simply change in attitude is all that is needed.

In other cases, when this card comes up in the seventh position reversed, it shows a lack of willpower. Most people are simply unable to cope with situations when this card comes up in this position. Many of these people are simply looking for the easy way out. Experience tells us that there usually is no easy way out and hard work is required for everything we do.

In the worst cases, when this card falls in the eighth position, this shows outright deceit from those around the subject. This is when the subject needs to be very careful with who they associate with.

The Magician can be a very powerful card as well as a very destructive one. It is critical to interpret this card carefully as the whole spread can be greatly affected by the influence of this card.
